Fun fact: Patagonia grew out of a small company that made tools for climbers, founded by climber Yvon Chouinard, who’s sole mission was to create a cleaner and better climbing experience.⁣

He started by forging pitons, the metal spikes that support a climber on a rope. He revolutionized the functionality and aesthetics of these pitons, creating a name and profitable business for himself. However, he eventually realized that with every new climber, these pitons were scarring and deteriorating the Earth’s rocks.⁣

Patagonia’s Values:

Sustainability | Fair Labor | Social Impact

Cruelty-Free | Natural | Transparency⁣

So, at the height of his company’s profitability, he gave up his best selling product because the environment took precedence. Instead he introduced aluminum chocks that didn’t damage the rock, and continued in pursuit of enhancing the world of climbing. In 1973 he took this success and founded the company we know and love as Patagonia.⁣

Today Patagonia continues to keep sustainability at the heart of their business, as they believe the environmental crisis has reached a critical tipping point.  They’ve made commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, defend clean water and air, divest from dirty technologies, and create a program to repair, share, and recycle old gear. In addition, for the last 40 years they have been supporting hundreds of grassroots activists every single year.⁣

“At Patagonia, the protection and preservation of the environment isn’t what we do after hours. It’s the reason we’re in business and every day’s work.”
